Margate has recently grown to be quite an artistic hub for Kent. Ever since the opening of the Turner Contemporary in 2011, it has become increasingly trendy and attracted a rise of down-from-Londoners moving to the area. But for centuries, as one of England’s first grand seaside resorts it has also drawn in visitors with its golden sandy bay and shallow tidal pool.

There are a variety of art galleries, who are celebrating Margate’s connection with the painter J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851), who described the famous sunsets along the North Kent coast as some of the best sunsets in the world. If one street can tell the story of Margate- and, of course, Cliftonville- it is Northdown Road. The street is home to some of the Isle of Thanet’s oldest businesses: like the charming Lovelys Art shop.

Lovely’s supplies art materials, provides picture framing and gallery space. The business has been trading since 1891 and celebrates its 134th birthday this summer. Ric grew up in this area around Margate and has painted the stunning views along that coastline many times.

Saturday 14th June – Saturday 5th July 2025
He is now showing his trademark oil on canvas paintings, as well as some Gouache and acrylics at Lovely’s. The selection also includes greeting cards and prints.

Northdown Road caters equally for old Margatonians, the Down From London creatives doing up old houses, and the diverse communities who have made their homes in Margate. Northdown Road is not seasonal, it’s more ‘local centric’ although the amount of tourists has gone through the roof and there’s much more of a mix of original products on offer now.
